Stickers are simple to make using materials you probably already have around the house; you should also make professional-looking stickers by using sticker paper, which is unoccupied at numerous office supply and craft stores. When you`re completed , let the mixture dry fully . There`s no desire to soak the stickers completely with the adhesive; purely brush on a light coating. Guaranteed high quality materials with long-lasting adhesiveness (will not fall off over time, resistant to rain, freezing weather conditions and cleaning agents) and long-lasting colour (will not fade over time either).

Possibility to combine several sets of birds to mix several colours.

There are two main types of window collisions: daytime and nighttime. In daylight, birds crash into windows because they see reflections of vegetation or see through the glass to potted plants or vegetation on the other side. At night, nocturnal migrants (including most songbirds) crash because they fly into lighted windows. Some of these nighttime collisions are due to chance, but much more often the nocturnal migrants are lured to their deaths by the lights. For reasons not entirely understood, lights divert nocturnal migrants from their original path, especially in low-ceiling or foggy conditions. In the lighted area, they mill about, sometimes colliding with one another or the lighted structure. The Fatal Light Awareness Program, based in Toronto, Canada, has much more about this problem.

Tempera paint or soap. Mark the outside of the window with soap or tempera paint, which is inexpensive and long lasting. You can use either a grid pattern no more than 4 inches by 2 inches (see above), or get creative and paint patterns or artwork on your window.

Decals. Put decals, stickers, sun catchers, mylar strips, masking tape, or other objects (even sticky notes) on the outside surface of the window. These are only effective when spaced very closely (see above).

Note that hawk silhouettes do little to deter birds. Remember: placing just one or two window stickers on a large window is not going to prevent collisions—they must cover most of the glass with the spaces between too narrow for birds to fly through.

ABC BirdTape. This long-lasting tape offers an easier way to apply the correct spacing of dots across your window. More about ABC BirdTape. Acopian Bird Savers. Also known as “zen curtains,” these closely spaced ropes hang down over windows.

They do the work of tape or decals but are easier to install and can be aesthetically pleasing. You can order them to fit your windows or make your own. Screens. Installing mosquito screens over your windows is very effective, as long as they are on the outside of the window and cover the entire surface.

Netting. Cover the glass on the outside with netting at least 3 inches from the glass, taut enough to bounce birds off before they hit. Small-mesh netting (around 5/8″ or 1.6 cm)  is best, so that birds don’t get their heads or bodies entangled but will bounce off unharmed.

You can mount the netting on a frame, such as a storm-window frame, for easy installation and removal. One-way transparent film. Products such as Collidescape permit people on the inside to see out, but makes the window appear opaque on the outside.

They can reduce the amount of light that comes in your window (this can also reduce your cooling costs), according to Sheppard.

If you’re building a new home or remodeling, the following ideas can also be good alternatives:

For over 10 years I have found these to be effective in preventing bird strikes against our string of 8 large windows and two glass french doors that face our bird feeders. We have had up to 300 gold finches at our feeders (counted by filled perches).

We also have many thrashers, cardinals, doves, wrens, sparrows, nuthatches and chickadees among others. That said, there are some aspects of their use that need to be taken into consideration.1) You need to use enough leaves.

I have ended up using 3 on a window pane that is 26” x 32”.2) Use a black light to see if the UV coating is still there. I tried that for the first time today before putting the leaves back up after cleaning the windows.

I was astonished to find that 8 had degraded coating, and 12 had NO coating left even though you could still feel the roughness on the side that used to have the coating. The difference between the coating working and not is easily seen inside with the black light.

I had them on a wood table when I used the light. I have ordered a bottle of the Window Alert UV liquid and intend to see if that can be applied to the “dead” leaves before I throw them away.

I do not date the leaves, but some could have been over a year old. So that is consistent with the advertisement and instructions.3) I noted today in the instructions as I applied 8 new ones, that the static-cling is restored by rinsing in lukewarm water.

I found that they apply nicely with much less air bubbles (even the new ones) if I just lay them for a second or two in lukewarm water (which quickly became cool outside). It is easy to squeegee with a paper towel and then your finger to get the air and water bubbles from underneath.

Start from the middle and work out.4) We have learned to close the solid front door because it appeared that the birds could see through the back glass french doors down the hall, see light through the glass storm door and think they could fly through.

Even though the glass back doors had 3-4 leaves each, the light at the end of the hall was too deceptive and we would have maybe one bird strike per year there and maybe one near hit, usually when there was a panic fly away from the feeders.

5) A negative that makes it 4 star – We found that when we removed them to clean the windows last week, maybe 3 or 4 had transferred some of their plastic to the window and required scraping with a razor blade.

We were using diluted ammonia to clean the window. That was adequate, with some hard rubbing and a dish scratchpad, to remove the outline of the leaves, but not the patches of plastic. Reading another blog, I will try full strength ammonia before scraping if this happens again.

For birds, glass windows are worse than invisible. By reflecting foliage or sky, they look like inviting places to fly into. And because the sheer number of windows is so great, their toll on birds is huge. Up to about 1 billion birds die from window strikes in the U.S. each year, according to a 2014 study.

Install external shutters and keep them closed when you’re not in the room or taking advantage of the light or view. (These can be huge energy savers, too!) Install external sun shades or awnings on windows, to block the reflection of sunlight.

Remote controlled shades are available. On new construction or when putting in new windows, consider windows that have the screen on the entire outside of the glass. Add interior vertical blinds and keep the slats only half open.

Avoid visual paths to sky and greenery. Bright windows on the opposite wall from your picture window may give the illusion of an open path to the other side. Closing a window shade or a door between rooms can sometimes solve this situation.

no bird strike here – just what we needed to save the birds from hitting the french windows – and very neat looking and so very little view obstruction from inside

We have a 20 x 40 deck hovering over a steep slope behind our house. A 3 ft. high glass barrier borders the entire deck. Wonderful for unobstructed views but deadly for the Towhees and Goldfinches that feed around the house; especially the Goldfinches.

2 or 3 per week was an intolerable loss rate. I tried placing potted plants in strategic locations along the glass border but those plants became perches and launching sites that ended in disaster. So I tried the Window Alert Maple Leaf decals.

I removed everything else from near the glass and gave the decals a good chance to prove their worth.Bottom line – in the many months since installation only one (1) Goldfinch has given his life for research.

The frosted leaves do not detract from the appearance of the glass. In fact, they look pretty good while doing a great service to birddom. I give them 5 stars out of 5.Instructions say the leaves lose their effectiveness in about 9 months so I bought enough to replace the originals.

There aren’t many per package so measure carefully and order a little bit extra. One note: we have a lot of house finches, hummingbirds, and house wrens nesting and feeding around our place. In 10 years, not one member of these species has crashed into the glass, or should I say I have never found an expired specimen?

Try some of the following ideas to make your windows safer. To deter small birds, vertical markings on windows need to be spaced no more than 4 inches apart and horizontal markings no more than 2 inches apart across the entire window. (If hummingbirds are a problem, the spacing should be reduced to a 2-inch by 2-inch grid.) All marking techniques should be applied to the outside of the window.

What happens to birds that hit windows? Sadly, the bird often dies, even when it is only temporarily stunned and manages to fly away. Many times these birds die later from internal bleeding or bruising, especially on the brain. Daniel Klem of Muhlenberg College has researched this issue since the 1970s. He writes, “Glass is an indiscriminate killer that takes the fit as well as the unfit of a species’ population.”

Arrived promptly. I was hesitant to put anything on our sliding glass door as my husband had complained about not wanting “ugly stickers” looking ridiculous and/or obstructing our view. I had a bird hit so hard last week that he was stunned for hours.

I thought surely he would die. I gently picked him up and put him in a nest I had found on the ground. The nest had a leaf covering it (almost like a tent) which hopefully helped him feel protected. I placed the nest carefully in the top of a hedge so he would get sunlight (it was a cold day) but be elevated and away from cats, etc.

Later that day he was gone! Hopefully regained his “head” and flew away…but who knows. Anyhow I couldn’t stand the thought of another bird just enjoying life until it slammed unexpectedly into what looks like the sky (I keep our windows very clean).

I went ahead and got these based on the pictures which show the almost see-though nature of the leaves from the inside, hoping my husband wouldn’t notice. Well, he did notice the stickers… and he likes them! I only used 2 of the 4 provided in the package and he actually suggested I put the other 2 up! These are very nice and unobtrusive.

No more feeling like a bird-killer! Win, win! Oh- the instructions indicate it is best to stick them to warm glass (50 degrees or above). It is winter here, so after cleaning the window I used a blow dryer to warm the spot on the glass before sticking and it worked great!

The good news is that you can greatly reduce the danger your home’s windows post to birds with some simple remedies, according to Christine Sheppard, who directs the Bird Collisions Program of the American Bird Conservancy. The group offers extensive information on preventing collisions on its website. The Fatal Light Awareness Program also offers great information on preventing bird collisions.

There’s one additional reason: birds sometimes see their reflection in a window and attack it. This happens most frequently in the spring when territoriality is high. Although it can be annoying to the homeowner, it’s seldom a threat to the bird’s survival. Most of the remedies suggested below for window strikes will also help solve the problem of a bird attacking its reflection.

They look good on your windows. I have had a couple of bird strikes but no where near as many as without the stickers. Might have to buy another pack as some windows only have 2. Easy to apply.

Start by identifying dangerous windows, including large picture windows, paired windows at right angles to each other, or windows with feeders outside. Go outside and look at your windows from a bird’s point of view. If you see branches or sky reflected in or visible through the glass, that’s what the birds will see, too. Past recommendations about safe distances for feeders outside windows are no longer thought to be valid, Sheppard says. “If you’ve got windows near a bird feeder, you should make them bird friendly and don’t worry about how far away they are.”
