Landmine-stickers with self-adhesive topsides were placed on the floor. They were invisible until they stuck to your feet. While removing them, people discovered the landmine-picture on the bottom side and were informed that in many other countries they would have been mutilated at this moment.

For over 65 years, stickers have been helping politicians get elected, building companies, establishing brands, advertising, starting conversations and increasing exposure. Yet despite being long-lasting and having a low cost per impression, not enough attention has been paid by marketers and businesses to the power of this sticky marketing tool.  Here are nine reasons astute businesses shouldn’t ignore this powerful, low-cost marketing medium.

Regardless of whether promotional stickers are displayed in public they can still be very cost effective. Whether handed out or mailed, quality stickers have a higher perceived value than other promotional mediums (business cards, brochures, flyers, etc.). They are viewed more as a gift than “advertising”. And, like promotional products they are harder to throw away immediately and can engage the recipient… “Where could I stick this?” “Who could I give this to?” “I haven’t donated in a while.” “I need to stop in there.” “I love these guys.”

Besides branding and efforts to increase exposure, stickers can be leveraged in other ways to enhance and strengthen marketing programs. Free stickers can be traded for addresses. Opinions and conversations can be encouraged on-line in social media to engage fans and customers. Valuable information or promotions can be delivered on the back of a sticker. Stickers improve the open rates of direct mail. Stickers can strengthen communities and awareness of a particular message. Cooperative campaigns with others can reduce costs and increase distribution and impressions. Successful or interesting sticker campaigns can generate excellent PR. And, much more…

Guerrilla Marketing Creative Uses of Stickers in Advertising

Because of the succinct nature of a promotional sticker, the process of development and design can help clarify and focus other marketing efforts (logo, website, advertisements, business cards, headlines, press releases, etc.). The same core questions need to be asked and analyzed:

Folliderm, a crand that prevents hair loss, used elevators in corporate offices and residential buildings to promote their company. A face of an man was stuck on the elevator door; such that his hair was stuck on one door and the rest of his face on the other. When the door opened, the hair pulled away. Another print was stuck in the inside of the elevator – where the man was shown bald. The line read: “Scared of losing your hair? Ask your doctor about Power 1+4″.

People walking through Chicago’s Jackson Tunnel were greeted with an overhead installation of potatoes breaking through the ceiling tiles, along with a witty message: “Our potatoes are grown closer than you may think.”

The company, Dressing for Pleasure, a specialist in fetish wear put stickers of enticing rear ends on the bottoms of ketchup bottles. Thus inviting bar patrons to explore a completely different appetite while addressing their hunger.

Promotional stickers are physical, off-line forms of social media and broadcasting. People were ‘liking’, posting, pinning, tagging and starting conversations with stickers long before the Internet. Designed and distributed properly they continually generate low-cost exposure, impressions and word of mouth marketing.

To sum up, marketing is about relationships; communicating what makes you unique and of value to the people who will benefit and are willing to support you. Stickers can be used in a number of ways to strengthen that bond and encourage that the word is spread. That is sticker marketing – utilizing one of the lowest-cost, highest exposure marketing tools available to make and strengthen connections. But, remember, like any form of marketing or advertising, sticker marketing requires proper planning, design and execution to maximize its effectiveness.

The use of stickers in advertising is not only an innovative way to attract attention, it is also an extremely cost-effective way to create a lasting impression. Many companies, whose only form of advertising is stickers, have seen an increase in business by as much as 550%. The great thing about these stickers is that they can be easily customized and this is probably one of the main reasons why they have become so popular. In this post, we’ve collected some of the most striking and creative examples of stickers in advertising. What do you think of these type of adverts? Please feel free to share other examples that you may know of in the comments’ section below.

Pedigree placed stickers in the shape of a dog barge in front of supermarkets and pet stores. These stickers were treated with essence of Pedigree dog food and therefore irresistible for every dog passing by. They ran towards the sticker and began to lick, sniff and wagged their tails, so their owners immediately knew what to buy.

Dermagraphic Tattoo’s placed stickers of tattoos in various bathroom and changing room mirrors so that people could line the tattoos up in the mirror to give the impression that they were actually on their skin, in order to promote their mission to “try before you buy a tattoo”. Below the tattoo was another sticker with the message.

The broken-glass sticker was placed on the window of an Apple Store to promote the iPod Hi-Fi.

Creative advertising for the TV show Million Dollar Catch by placing stickers at either end of the lanes.

Promotional stickers, done right, can also become profitable products themselves. A brand name, slogan or image can become a sticky product. You don’t have to be Life Is Good or a popular band to create stickers that fans will pay for. If you’ve got retail options, a unique angle to a specific market, or fans and advocates, you can definitely create a sticker with enough perceived value to warrant people wanting to show it off, and willing to pay for the privilege. Just make sure the sticker fits the customer’s personal needs and preferences, not just your own marketing/branding needs.

Once they pushed against the door, it seemed like these sportsmen push back and don’t allow them to come in. But of course, the door opened in the usual way. The copy line says simply “Milk makes you stronger. Meiji.”

Stickers are no longer just “bumper stickers”. The days of big, white, rectangular stickers for car bumpers are disappearing and being replaced with promotional stickers of all shapes and sizes for application to windows, water bottles, laptops, equipment, signs, phones, people… anywhere.

All-China Women’s Federation “Door” Guerilla Marketing Example

If you’re a small business owner, entrepreneur, freelancer or running a side business, then you already know how tight funds can be and the importance of sticking to the budget. You are likely avoiding large unnecessary purchases like the plague.

You may not think it’s important, but here’s why you need a company vehicle.  Why Do I need a Company Vehicle? A company vehicle is quite possibly the best marketing tool going. Branding your vehicle is typically a one-time cost.

Over time, the return on your investment can be huge. Each time you are out driving, you are in the sight-line of potentially hundreds of other drivers, pedestrians, passengers and shoppers. If you have a branded company vehicle to drive, that is hundreds or thousands of impressions for your business each day.

The more times people see your business name, the more likely they are to remember you and look you up later. A branded vehicle brings some legitimacy to your business. Having a branded vehicle will make you look more professional and as a result your customers will be more comfortable hiring your services.

I Can’t Afford To Buy Another Vehicle As a small business ourselves, we completely understand this concern. Our solution- use your own vehicle. Your car, truck, van, whatever it may be can be branded with your business information through stickers and decals.

Some ideas:Add vinyl lettering with your logo, web address and business phone number to the back window or trunk of your car. This won’t block your vision, is easy to apply and can be removed without causing any damage to your vehicle.

If you’re not a fan of vinyl lettering, try a clear window decal instead. This vinyl material has a front or back adhesive option, meaning you can apply it to the inside of your car windows. Add your business logo and web address, social handles or any other information.

I Don’t Want My Car Branded All the Time If your vehicle is also for personal use, then you may not want it covered in your business info all the time. StickerYou has a number of removable and reusable products to help you brand and un-brand your vehicle.

You can even transfer these products from vehicle to vehicle allowing you to brand any car- even rentals! Stow them away and re-stick them in place when working.Window clings are very similar to our clear vinyl decals.

However window clings have no adhesive and stick to your window using static electricity. This makes them easily removable and reusable. Large magnets will stick great to the metal body of any vehicle as long as it is a smooth surface.

Stick them on the doors or even the tail of your car. The thin magnet material is barely noticeable and will stay stuck in place while driving, even in poor weather. These magnets are easy to peel up and will not damage your vehicle.

How Do I Do It? Do you have a business logo? A website address? A business phone number? All of the above?Great! All the products listed above for branding your vehicle can be created a purchased online whenever at your convenience.

Just follow these steps:1) Simply create an account at StickerYou.com or login to your existing account, then choose the product you would like to order. 2) From there you just need to upload your logo design or type in the information you would like included (web address or phone number).

 3) Once the decal, magnet or window cling looks how you wish in the preview, choose the quantity you would like and place your order. There are no minimum order quantities on these products and they will be shipped right to your door.

Some Tips and Tricks  – Make sure your logo or any artwork you wish to use is high resolution (minimum 300 px)- For window decals, brighter colors will look best. Darker colors will be less visible, especially on tinted windows.

 – Measure your usable space first. Plan out where you would apply your decals, magnets or clings and then use a tape measure to measure the flat space. You don’t want to order a product that is too big for the space.

**All products can be ordered in any shape and any size you choose. For questions about branding your vehicle or options for doing so, feel free to contact our sales team. Curious about our products? Request a free sample pack to try before you buy!

Think off-line marketing is passé or not as effective as social media for word-of-mouth? Think again. Recent studies show that 90% of people trust word-of-mouth recommendations from people they know (Nielsen). And, 90% of word-of-mouth about brands is taking place off-line (Keller Fay Group). Yet tools, like stickers, used to encourage and amplify off-line (as well as on-line) word of mouth are often overlooked by many businesses. This is an obvious mistake.

Who do I want to communicate with (who is my market)? Where do I find them? How do I make contact? What are their interests (what do they want/need)? What is my unique offering, message and/or story (identity)? How do I communicate and broadcast my message/identity cleanly, simply, graphically and quickly to my market and prospects? 8.

Compliment and Enhance Other Marketing Efforts

The househould cleaning product Cillit BANG placed transparent stickers on 5 Cent coins they gave out as change to consumers, that were half way cleaned by Cillit BANG and half way dirty.

Advertising/marketing has shifted to more permission and connection based models. Advertising that interrupts or is lost in a sea of other pitches is (usually) no longer cost-effective, especially for small businesses. The power of stickers lies in the fact that when displayed they are not perceived as advertising at all. They are personal endorsements, recommendations and badges of support for a message, product or organization.

To promote Wipeout (a TV show where people wipe out on obstacle courses to win money) stickers were placed inside laundromat dryers to give people something to look at while they waited for their washing to dry

Huge floor stickers placed in malls to promote their solution to pet flea problems.

To communicate that Zoo Safari is not a common zoo, because the animals run free just like in a safari, Zoo Safari created electrostatic stickers containing animal picture that can be placed on the windshield of parked cars to make the visitor imagine what it would feel like to be so close to a wild animal.

Promotional stickers are not always a give-away item, of course. They are also an inexpensive way to brand products, packaging, signage and serviced equipment. You can’t always rely on others becoming advocates that spread your message and brand, but you certainly can do it yourself, whenever possible, in tasteful and effective ways.
